Description from the seller

Rare six-volume set of this illustrated edition with 127 engravings on copper, of which 74 are double-page or folding, and with 3 unlisted maps, translated from Greek by Thuillier with comments by Folard, illustrated with beautiful plates hors-texte including two-page spreads and folding plates -

The edition presents the history of the Mediterranean world between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, a period during which the Roman Republic progressively established itself as the leading political, military, and diplomatic power of the ancient world -

Polybius undertakes to explain how, in less than fifty-three years, Rome manages to subdue most of the Mediterranean states, turning a set of regional conflicts into universal domination -

The author opens his narrative with an analysis of the events following Alexander the Great’s conquests and the fragmentation of his empire among the Hellenistic kingdoms -
