Il Ceppo – HISTORY OF THE BRAND
Il Ceppo represents one of the most authentic and elegant realities of Italian pipe craftsmanship from the Marche school of Pesaro.
The brand origins go back to the early 1970s, but it is in 1978 that the brand assumes a true international identity thanks to architect Giorgio Imperatori, a passionate collector and connoisseur of Italian handmade pipes.
In 1995 the workshop passed into the hands of Franco Rossi, an artisan who had collaborated with Bruto Sordini of Don Carlos and with the milieu of the historic Pesaro school also linked to Ser Jacopo and Mastro de Paja.
Il Ceppo pipes are renowned for:
- nearly entirely handcrafting;
- air-dried briar seasoned for long periods;
- excellent smoking qualities;
- careful finishes;
- classic Italian style reinterpreted with strong personality.
Over the years Franco Rossi developed a recognizable style, characterized by elegant lines, large flame grain surfaces and sometimes distinctive faceted heads, today highly sought after by collectors.
Production has always deliberately remained limited, with about 1500 pipes per year, many of which exported to the United States, where the brand enjoys a strong reputation among enthusiasts of Italian handcrafted pipes.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PIPE
The specimen shown is an elegant straight billiard of large size, branded:
“IL CEPPO”
“MADE BY HAND”
“ITALY”
shape E4858
The pipe features:
- a substantial length of about 158 mm;
- a very slender and elegant profile;
- stunning natural vertical flame grain;
- superior quality briar;
- classic black mouthpiece, well-proportioned;
- large and deep chamber;
- excellent aesthetic balance typical of the Pesaro school.
The stylistic approach recalls the best Italian productions from the 1980s and 1990s:
- sober, functional pipes, but with a strong artisanal character.
The briar quality appears very good, with warm, regular grain that enhances the elongated shape of the head.
The overall condition is very good, with normal light use compatible with a well-preserved vintage handmade pipe.
CURRENT COLLECTOR VALUE
For a Il Ceppo handmade specimen of this level, 158 mm long, well preserved and with beautiful natural flame, the current realistic market value is:
€220 / 240
