Description from the seller

A0000005374

We are auctioning one of the most aristocratic, slender, and sophisticated silhouettes of French high jewelry from the 20th century: the vertical-format pocket lighter by the iconic Cartier Paris Maison, handcrafted in France throughout the 1970s. This superb collector’s piece stands out for its iconic minimalist aesthetic and unmistakable architectural design, characterized by a solid chassis with a sumptuous textured finish that oozes the timeless elegance and quiet luxury associated with the Place Vendôme brand.

The lighter’s body features the legendary Godron pattern (deeply etched horizontal ridges), a classic Cartier jewelry motif that runs around all four sides of the piece. This finish not only provides a highly pleasant, textured hand grip but also creates an optical play of metallic gleams and shadows of great beauty as the light hits it. With stylized dimensions of 7.1 cm in height, 2.5 cm in width, and barely 1.2 cm in thickness, this is one of the most ergonomic and elegant lighters ever designed, distancing itself from the more robust shapes of the competition at the time. At the base, the official brand hallmarks, workshop seal, and its individual serial number 46170 F are clearly visible, engraved with Cartier’s classic stamp.

Mechanically, the piece is a masterwork of Swiss-French microengineering from the golden age. It incorporates the hinged lid opening system with a serrated ignition wheel and the characteristic clean base, which impeccably hides the regulation valve, the gas-loading gate, and the flint compartment. The lighter is in excellent cosmetic condition and fully functional, offering an instant spark and a sharp, steady, perfectly adjustable flame, as certified in the images.

Condition Report: Collection Quality / Excellent Vintage
The aesthetic and mechanical state of this example is magnificent, indicating it has been a display piece cared for with meticulous attention:

Chassis and Godron Finish: It is in extraordinary condition. The horizontal ridges retain all their original relief and show no typical wear from friction or flattening. The edges and corners (critical points of these lighters) are clean and completely free of structural impacts.

Fit and Hinge: The top lid opens and closes with a firm, clean, and aligned motion, maintaining perfect geometric tension in the hinge with no play.

Mechanical: The side roller rotates with milimetric smoothness. The system’s seal has been checked, the valve is hermetic (no leaks), and the gas outlet is constant, ensuring an immediate ignition.

The Curator’s Interesting Fact for Collectors
For Catawiki’s appraisers, Cartier lighters from the classic Godron line in silver finish and slender format have become highly sought-after vintage assets due to their extreme scarcity in fully operational condition. The vast majority of these 1970s lighters that come to market suffer chronic gas losses or severe wear to the ridged relief. Finding a specimen with such clean numbering, preserving the textured relief intact, and displaying a flame as powerful and lively as this is a genuine rarity that typically spikes interest among high-end collectors in the international market. The fact that it is 100% operational and with such a crisp flame ensures intense competition and a truly wild bidding ratio on the international arena.

I wish you the best of luck with your bids and a superb auction to all Catawiki participants!
