Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911. From a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years pursuing philosophical studies, before dedicating himself as a self-taught artist to artistic exploration, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.
A man of faith, he believed that only through art could the divine be reached. And this thought will underpin all of his work: "I try to make the void — Gentilini declared — This void provokes a certain catharsis: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reassess them, yet I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the sign never thought."
He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, human and aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
