Description from the seller
Tamara de Lempicka:
“Man with a Hat (Tamara's first husband), 1928”.
Color offset. Condition: the work is in very good condition.
Format: 44 x 31 cm.
The men of Tamara are all conquerors. They are heroes who have never fought and sovereignly take what they want. Their day is lit by artificial light, their stage is the parquet floor of high society. They promise lascivious adventures. But she felt the brutality behind the façade and conveyed the coldness of her erotism.
The portrait of the man with the top hat in his hand shows Tamara's first husband, whom she married in Saint Petersburg. The unfinished left hand of the man testifies to their separation in 1928, the year the painting was made. In 1934 Tamara de Lempicka married for the second time, this time in Switzerland, to the wealthy Hungarian baron Raoul Kuffner.
She preferred rich, older men in order to afford money and luxury. She also had a relationship with the flamboyant Italian national poet and friend of Mussolini, Gabriele d'Annunzio.
The original painting is located in Paris, Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou.
Never framed and kept in a dark archive storage between protective acid-free paper.
The shown photos are part of the description.
