Description from the seller

AUTHOR

Osvaldo Provvidone (1920 – 2013) Italian painter. Born in Novara, he was a visual artist capable of standing out in the Italian contemporary art scene through a continuous and passionate stylistic search. His training roots delve into the fervent post-war period: he studied at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin, guided by two masters of such calibre as Felice Casorati and Enrico Paolucci, the latter elected as his direct guide. After teaching in Turin at the State Institute of Figure and Fashion (then directed by Italo Cremona) and, later, in high schools and technical institutes in his Novara, Provvidone fully embraced the activity of exhibitions. Since the 1960s he began to gather significant recognitions, among which the victory of the second prize for tempera at the I Roman Biennale of Contemporary Art in 1967 stands out.

From the point of view of poetics and technique, starting in the 1950s Provvidone's art underwent a decisive shift: the artist moved away from formal rigor to an utopian exploration of abstract spatiality. His style is defined through a highly personal painting of mark and gesture, often described by critics as a true and sumptuous "chromatic magma", capable of translating interior emotionality into vibrations on the canvas. Conceiving painting as a flow in constant becoming, Provvidone alternated works of extreme delicacy and tonal refinement with creations characterized by strong material sensibility and irregular color fields. His insatiable experimental drive led him to surpass the confines of oil and tempera on canvas, exploring graphics, mixed media on cardboard, and venturing into textile art and the integration of artworks into aesthetic-architectural contexts.

His works have been historicized, acquired, or enhanced through surveys sponsored by the institutions of his territory: the Municipality of Novara has celebrated his legacy with high-profile exhibitions, such as the one hosted in the Salone dell’Arengo del Broletto in 2002 and the retrospectives at Spazio aperto all’Arte, consolidating in a definitive way his role as a vibrant and autonomous voice of Italian contemporary art.

DESCRIPTION

"Untitled", mixed media on cardboard mounted on panel, 86x68 cm, 1961. On the back gallery label and a label from the 2005 exhibition "Osvaldo Provvidone - Selected Works", of which a copy of the catalog will be provided.

The composition asserts itself as an autonomous and material exploration of an interior landscape, an emotional topography where forms never crystallize into defined objects, but remain in a perpetual state of flow and energy. Realized at a crucial moment in Provvidone’s career, just after the definitive separation from the more rigorously figurative influences of his training, this work embodies the full adoption of the informal language.

The composition is structured on a dynamic fragmentation of overlapped and interlocked planes, where bold color masses dialogue and clash. A dark, deep vertical axis, dominated by intense purple and burnt brown, anchors the right side of the composition, while on the left and bottom broad fields of golden ochre, bright yellow, and orange extend, interrupted by blocks of gray-lavender and cream white. The technique is extremely gestural and tactile, with visible brushstrokes alternating density with transparency. Particularly interesting is the scrimshaw-like play and the fine lines, almost filiform, that traverse the painting surface, scratching the upper layers to reveal the underlying ones or adding a delicate aerial reticular structure, as seen in the central-left area, almost evoking a fragile network or a geometrized figure dissolving.

The work fits perfectly within Provvidone’s mature poetics, characterized by a search for abstract spatiality that avoids superficial decoration in favor of visceral expression. The work embodies the idea of painting as a "chromatic magma" described by critics, a flowing energy in constant becoming where color is not only pigment but material emotion that vibrates on the surface. In this period, the artist strengthens his identity as a colorist, pushing to the limit the ability of color to convey moods and energy, alternating moments of extreme delicacy with sudden material resentments. A painting of energetic composition, dynamic and striking in its aesthetic impact.

CONDITION REPORT

Good overall condition. The work has vivid and legible color and brushwork, with a slight waviness of the support at the lower right corner (see photo). This does not in the least affect the overall aesthetic rendering.

The photo of the painting placed in a setting is generated with artificial intelligence and should be considered purely exemplary. Only the remaining photos, which faithfully show the object and its features, both general and detailed, are valid.
