The Minitel (for “Interactive medium by digitization of telephone information”) is a type of computer terminal intended to connect to the French videotex service called Teletel, commercially operated in France between July 1980 and June 30, 2012. It was the first service in the world to provide access to a variety of prefiguring those of the future Internet, and the most developed in 1990. It uses for this the French X.25 Transpac network which itself prefigures the future Internet transmission infrastructure. It enjoyed considerable success and remained in use for a long time, even in competition with the Internet.
