Biography of the artist:
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist primarily recognized as a marble sculptor (Carrara, Bardiglio…), but he also developed a significant pictorial production that remained confidential for a long time and is now highly sought after.
Deeply influenced by the Cobra movement (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille…), he drew inspiration from it to create abstract-figurative compositions full of strength and freedom. His paintings and works on paper are characterized by a vivid palette, spontaneous gesture, and simplified anthropomorphic figures that express a vital and organic energy.
His studio produced authentic works that attest to this double talent: sculptural rigor combined with the explosive freedom of Cobra painting.
His pictorial pieces from the 1970s, like this one, are especially appreciated for their freshness and direct connection to the post-war European heritage.
