Description from the seller
Antique Sterzinger Horn Snuff Box – South Tyrol – Early 19th Century (Double-Sided Engraved)
Description:
Beautiful and authentic example of an early 19th-century Sterzinger horn snuff box (Sterzinger Horndose) from South Tyrol. This type of rare folk art is renowned for the highly detailed, hand-engraved engravings (scrimshaw technique) that are colored with pigments.
This specific piece is above average in desirability due to the rare, high-quality double-sided decoration:
Top Side (Lid): A classic Alpine landscape with a group of deer and roebucks beneath a richly decorated edge of traditional flower motifs.
Bottom Side (Base): A beautifully worked village scene of a typical Alpine village with a church and houses against a mountain landscape, finished with fine flowers.
Sides: Around the edges are fine border decorations, including ducks swimming in the water under the sun and a mountain hut.
Condition:
The box is in beautiful, authentic condition with fantastic preservation of the red and green pigment colors. The brass hinge and the original brass pins on the inside are in good, working order. Considering the respectable age of over 200 years and the natural material, there are some light crazing cracks and a few small chips along the edges (see photos). This is inherent to antique horn and does not diminish the exceptional decorative value of this collectible object.
Specifications:
Length: 7.8 cm
Width: 5.4 cm
Height: 2.2 cm
Material: Horn & Brass
Period: circa 1800 - 1830
