Oil on canvas
Bertha Müller was a Dutch artist, born in 1883 and died in 1968. She worked as a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, gilder, and pastel artist. Her oeuvre mainly consists of portraits, landscapes, still lifes of flowers, and figure subjects, executed in an impressionistic, sometimes intimate style.
Müller worked during the first half of the twentieth century and exhibited in the Netherlands. Her work is characterized by a refined color treatment and a calm, observant approach to her subjects. Especially her pastels and watercolors reveal a subtle sense of light and atmosphere.
Although Bertha Müller is less well known today than some of her contemporaries, her work is regularly offered at art auctions and is included in the documentation of the RKD – Dutch Institute for Art History, the most important database for Dutch artists.
Her work is representative of a generation of Dutch artists who in the first half of the twentieth century continued a solid, artisanal painting tradition, with particular attention to atmosphere, light, and refined technique.
