Description from the seller
This is a traditional Japanese Bugaku mask representing Kotoku (胡徳), a character used in the classical court dance tradition of Bugaku.
The reverse of the mask bears the inscriptions "Bugaku Mask" (舞楽面) and "Kotoku" (胡徳), identifying both the type of mask and the character it represents.
Bugaku is the ancient ceremonial dance performed together with Gagaku, the classical court music of Japan. Introduced from China, Korea, and other parts of Asia more than a thousand years ago, Bugaku has been preserved by the Imperial Court and major shrines and temples as one of Japan's oldest performing arts.
Kotoku is one of the traditional Bugaku characters and is portrayed with a serene expression, gently smiling features, and a dignified appearance. The refined facial modeling conveys calmness, wisdom, and elegance rather than dramatic emotion, reflecting the graceful aesthetic characteristic of Bugaku performance.
The mask is carefully carved and painted, with softly modeled features that create a quiet yet expressive presence. Whether displayed as an art object or appreciated within the context of Japanese performing arts, it possesses a timeless sense of refinement.
