The Hague-based painter Jan Gerard Smits was a pupil of Salomon Verveer. His early work belongs to Romanticism. He enjoyed painting city and village views. As a pupil of Salomon Verveer, he chose to paint city and village scenes as well as the beach and dunes near Scheveningen and Katwijk. But his work did not limit itself to the surroundings of his residence, and he regularly crossed the country in search of picturesque towns and landscapes.
