Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, so Jan’s upbringing was entirely in the care of his mother. Jan’s mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed in foster families and colony homes by child protection services. In the fifties he held a variety of jobs, served with the marines, and for a time worked as a sailor on the open sea. In 1958 he spent a few months training at the art academies in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for a time on Ibiza and moved to New York in 1964. Thereafter he lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer, Cremer rose to fame with “I, Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. As a result, the literary quality of his writing was not regarded as very high by everyone. The novel was banned from libraries for a long time. “I, Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travelogues and plays. Jan Cremer’s art consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and often depicts Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors."} } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } }}
