Description from the seller

A unique military and literary manuscript, 35 pages, Constantine, by Sergeant August Lanclou, 1837
an additional added document, a handwritten poem by Guy Ropartz.
An exceptionally rich and fully preserved historical military manuscript from the 19th century, this literary epic with no fewer than 35 handwritten pages (partly double-sided) is dedicated to the historical French military campaigns and the bloody conquest of the Algerian city of Constantine, October 1837.
The author Lanclou served with the 5th Line Regiment, a convinced republican and a poet from Lyon, and a political refugee in Belgium.
The manuscript contains valuable historical and tactical details about the fighting. Including an additional historical finding. In the manuscript there is a loose, handwritten document containing the text of the poem "Soleil" by the well-known composer and poet Joseph Ropartz (1864–1955); this document has been carefully preserved in the manuscript by a later collector or descendant.
