With this square-format work, Medsan sets the Thousand Sunny—the Straw Hat crew's ship in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece—at the heart of a festival of floating lanterns (tōrō nagashi). Under a full moon and a starry sky, the lion-fronted prow boat glides on a tranquil water speckled with hundreds of golden lanterns, among gnarled pines, stone lanterns and an illuminated pagoda. This unique print bears the signature “メドサン” (Medsan).

The visual power of the composition lies in its nocturnal painterly treatment, with rich impasto and warm light: the golden reflections of the lanterns dance on the deep blue water, while the silver moon traces a luminous wake. A fairy-tale atmosphere, between print and painting, worthy of Japan’s most beautiful summer nights.

About the Workshop:
