Description from the seller
A0000005624
VINTAGE TELESCOPING DIP PEN INK (U.S., LATE 19th CENTURY): We are putting up for auction an authentic jewel of goldsmithing applied to writing instruments: a telescoping dip pen (portaplumas) from the late 19th or early 20th century.
This piece stands out for its elaborate aesthetics. The cylindrical body features superb repoussé and chased work in a spiral, adorned with intricate floral motifs and scrollwork characteristic of Victorian high society. All the relief work is coated with a thick and brilliant gold-filled finish.
It features a lateral sliding mechanism on the central ring that allows extending or retracting the nib safely for pocket transport in a waistcoat, thus preserving the tip’s integrity. Additionally, the rear end of black ebony telescopes out, transforming this pocket piece into a full-sized desktop instrument with perfect balance.
It mounts a historic solid gold nib made in New York, the cradle of the world’s finest jewelers and nib makers at that time. It is very likely to be a historic period replacement (marriage), a common practice when users visited their trusted stationery to replace a damaged nib with another of the highest calligraphic quality.
Condition (Expert Assessment)
Please examine the photographic gallery carefully, bearing in mind that this is an instrument over a hundred years old:
Gold and Ebony Body: The metalwork is exceptional. The gold finish shows a spectacular patina, keeping the relief of the flowers and the spiral in magnificent condition. The black ebony is intact and crack-free.
Personalization: The central sliding ring bears the original owner’s initials beautifully engraved by graver, a historical testament to its past.
Mechanism: The lateral slide and the telescopic extraction operate smoothly and correctly.
Nib: The gold nib (New York) is in good condition. (Note: It is a dip instrument; it does not have an internal ink reservoir. It is delivered as is, without original case).
Shipping
The item will be carefully protected and securely packaged, with insured shipping and an international tracking number.
A wonderful opportunity for antique collectors and calligraphers to add a mechanical and artistic jewel of the 19th century to their collection! Good luck to all bidders!
