Description from the seller

This oil painting on canvas is a work by the Belgian artist Charles-Louis Bisschops (Liège, 1894 – Rossignol, 1975), painter, graphic artist and draftsman. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he was taught by, among others, Jean Delville and Constant Montald. As a volunteer during World War I he was wounded twice, an experience that also left its mark on his early work. After the war he traveled to Italy, Algeria, Spain and France. The intense Mediterranean light and the rich colors of these countries strongly influenced his painting and led to a clear palette and a pronounced sense of light and atmosphere.

Bisschops painted figures, genre scenes and landscapes, but became especially known for his elegant female portraits, dancers and Spanish figures in traditional dress. In addition he worked as a decorative painter and designed sets. In 1944 he contributed to the famous Panorama of the Battle of Dinant by Alfred Bastien. His work is characterized by refined technique, harmonious compositions and a lively coloration. Today his oeuvre is represented in various museum and public collections, where it bears witness to his important place within Belgian painting of the twentieth century.
