The Hague painter Jan Gerard Smits was a pupil of Salomon Verveer. His early work belongs to Romanticism. He enjoyed painting urban and rural views. As a pupil of Salomon Verveer he chose to paint cityscapes and rural views as well as the beach and the dunes near Scheveningen and Katwijk.
