Description from the seller
landscapes
Jacobus Leonardus van der Meide was a Dutch painter who gained particular fame for his atmospheric landscapes, harbor scenes, and waterworks. He was born on April 6, 1910 in Gouda, a city with which he remained connected for his entire life. His oeuvre is characterized by a romantic approach to the landscape, in which light, reflections and a warm color harmony play a central role.
Van der Meide developed a recognizable painting style in which sunsets, tranquil rivers, windmills, ponds and coastal views recur regularly. The play of light on the water often forms the most important pictorial element. His compositions radiate calm and serenity and align with the tradition of Dutch Romantic landscape painting. In addition to Dutch landscapes, he also painted Mediterranean coastlines, Venetian cityscapes and other foreign locations, which he also endowed with his characteristic warm evening light.
His paintings were sold both nationally and internationally and are still regularly found at art auctions in the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States. Particularly his larger canvases with sunsets, harbors and water landscapes are beloved by collectors for their decorative appeal and technical craftsmanship.
Although Van der Meide did not belong to the innovators of modern art, he managed to attract a broad audience with his accessible and meticulously executed paintings. His work exudes a sense of calm, nostalgia and timelessness and aligns with an appreciation for classic Dutch landscapes. It is precisely this combination of technical mastery, atmospheric lighting and recognizable subjects that continues to make his oeuvre appealing to collectors of twentieth-century Dutch painting.
