Born in Tunisia to a Sicilian family, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Tunis and subsequently moved to Paris, where he came into contact with the main European artistic avant-gardes. After World War II he settled in Rome and was among the founders of the group Forma 1, which promoted abstract art inspired by the values of modernity. His works are distinguished by the intense use of color, the dynamism of forms, and a painting rich in energy and light.
