Description from the seller
GATO EN LA COCINA is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. This work presents a simple, character-rich domestic scene: a black cat, seated on a wooden chair with a red cushion, occupies the center of the composition and looks directly at the viewer. Around it, blue and white ceramic dishes, a small teapot, containers, and plant motifs build a bright, warm, inhabited kitchen, where the animal becomes the true owner of the space.
The painting blends the domestic interior genre, still life, and animal portrait. The palette is organized with aqua greens, soft yellows, cobalt blues, and small reddish accents, while the cat’s black form provides the main contrast. The visible brushwork and the simplification of forms bring the work closer to Fauvism, Post-Impressionism, and a contemporary figuration with a naïve and decorative character.
The free use of color and the integration of everyday objects recall Henri Matisse’s interiors, where furniture, ceramics, textiles, and plants actively participate in the composition. Echoes of Pierre Bonnard can also be perceived in the intimacy of the scene and in the way a humble corner of the home is transformed into a poetic image. The presence of the cat also links to a long tradition in art history, from Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen’s felines to modern representations of the animal as a silent companion and independent figure.
The blue and white ceramics in the background add an ornamental dimension and reinforce the dialogue between painting and decorative arts. The cat, with its yellow eyes and calm posture, concentrates attention and adds a note of mystery, humor, and familiarity. It is not a secondary element, but an authentic psychological portrait within the interior.
Gato en la cocina celebrates the beauty of everyday life and the presence of animals in the home. It is a luminous and approachable work, especially appealing to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, cats, colorful interiors, kitchens, ceramics, still lifes, and compositions with references to Fauvism, Matisse, Bonnard, and the naïf art tradition.
