Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911. Since he was young, he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years, pursuing philosophical studies, before dedicating himself, as a self-taught artist, to artistic research, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.
An man of faith, he believes that only through art can one reach the divine. And this belief will underpin his entire work:
"I try to create emptiness – Gentilini declared – This emptiness provokes in me a certain catharsis: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reevaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the sign never thought."
He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint he was devoted to. The two natures, the human and the aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
