Description from the seller
Lot title: Antique British Sterling Silver Lucifer Matchbox Holder – Birmingham, ca. 1910-1930
Description: Offered is a beautiful and elegant antique lucifer/matchbox holder (matchbox cover) made from solid British silver. This luxurious desktop accessory dates from the early 20th century (Edwardian / early Art Deco period) and was designed to stylishly clad a standard cardboard matchbox. The holder features a very fine, refined vertical line pattern (engine-turned / guilloché decoration) all around. Thanks to the handy cutouts on the sides, the striking surface of the box remains perfectly accessible, while the oval openings at the top and bottom make it easy to slide the inner box open.
On the underside the object is stamped with a complete and official set of traditional British silver hallmarks:
Anchor: City mark of the Birmingham Assay Office.
Lion Passant: Legal guarantee for first-rate (.925) sterling silver.
Date Letter: Wear/mark appropriate to the early 20th century.
Mastermark: Maker's mark (partly worn) above the hallmarks.
A splendid and authentic collectible for enthusiasts of antique silver and unique smoking accessories.
