Item Description
A complete Japanese travel tea ceremony set (chabako), in the traditional Rikyu style named after the tea master Sen no Rikyu. The lacquered chabako itself is decorated with an elegant fan motif (senmen makie) in gold and soft pink lacquer over a deep reddish-brown ground, with folded fan shapes rendered in fine gold maki-e detail across the lid and sides. The set is fitted out with a full complement of traditional utensils:
- Chawan: a ceramic tea bowl with a crackled cream glaze, decorated with an autumn maple leaf design in enamels and gold.
- Furidashi: a gourd-shaped small porcelain container used to hold sweets, in blue and white with a fan and landscape design.
- Chakin-zutsu: a cylindrical blue and white porcelain container used to hold the tea cloth (chakin).
- Natsume: a lacquered tea caddy for thin tea (usucha), decorated to match the chabako with gold fan motifs.
- Kogo: a small lacquered incense container with gold fan maki-e decoration.
- Chashaku: a bamboo tea scoop.
- Chasen: a bamboo tea whisk.
- Fukusa: a plain silk cloth used to purify the tea utensils during the ceremony.
