Set of 2 original ship's lanterns in copper/brass – Tavernier Oostende – numbers 332 & 45 – circa 1940–1950.

Description:

Two original copper ship lanterns from commercial shipping, both manufactured by Tavernier Oostende, a well-known Belgian producer of maritime lighting and ship’s equipment in the mid-20th century.

The copper housings bear clear stamped markings, including factory serial numbers 332 and 45. They also carry the round BV (Bureau Veritas) certification mark, the international classification society certifying ship components for professional use at sea.

Special historical detail:

Although the sturdy copper housings and authentic details (such as the specific bracket cutouts on the rear) clearly date from the period circa 1940–1950, the Fresnel glass lenses were professionally renewed at a later stage. The red port lens and the green starboard lens bear the official inscription “DHI 03/03/76.” This proves that the lanterns were fitted with newly approved glass by the Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut in 1976 to meet the then-modern international safety standards. This adds an interesting value to the lot: it testifies to a long, active, and well-documented service life at sea.
The lamps have now been tested and operate atmospherically on electricity.

As is customary with navigation lamps from this period, no specific ship provenance is known. Such lamps were purchased separately by shipping companies and installed on various vessels.
