With The Cat in Majesty, Max-Daniel transforms the familiar animal into a sovereign, almost sacred figure. Set in an interior with classical touches, the cat poses with absolute calm. Its green, direct and impassive gaze immediately imposes its presence. Behind it, a wide disk of gold leaf evokes both a Byzantine halo, a star, and the emblem of imaginary royalty.

The twist lies in this deliberately solemn staging: the domestic cat receives here symbolic attributes once reserved for saints, monarchs and illustrious figures. The humor remains subtle, never compromising the elegance of the composition. Moreover, the animal does not seem at all surprised by the honors bestowed upon it: it appears to regard them as perfectly natural.

Artificial intelligence serves as a design and visual exploration tool: it enables an image with a familiar character to emerge, but slightly displaced, like the memory of an old portrait that never existed.

This first image is then printed on canvas before being hand-finished. Oil painting modulates the colors, deepens the depths, blurs certain boundaries and introduces the artist’s gesture into the precision of the digital image. The gold leaf, applied freely and irregularly, adds a physical presence impossible to reproduce by printing alone.

The work does not seek to hide its hybrid origin. On the contrary, it embraces the dialogue between two temporalities: the instantaneous one of contemporary technologies and the slow, material-based one of craft. The generated image becomes a starting point that the artist transforms, enriches, and personalizes until each realization becomes a truly unique work.

Through this hybridization, Max-Daniel lightly questions the making of icons and our need to endow beings we love with symbolic meaning. The cat, an independent, mysterious, and sometimes deliciously haughty animal, naturally lends itself to this game of sacralization. A beloved companion of the artist himself, it becomes here the subject of a sincere and playful homage.
