Op zee is an oil painting by Wouter van Soest (1957) from the Netherlands, created in 1990–2000, depicting a seascape, hand-signed, original edition, sold with a frame, measuring 11 by 13 cm.
Description from the seller
This painting was created by the Dutch artist Wouter van Soest (1938–2007), a painter who during the second half of the twentieth century occupied a wholly distinct position within Dutch modern art. Although he operated in a time when abstraction and conceptual art were becoming increasingly dominant, Van Soest remained faithful to painting as a means to explore light, space and stillness.
His work is characterized by a great sensitivity to atmosphere and a subtle handling of color. Van Soest did not paint literal representations of reality, but rather its experience. Landscapes, skies and architectural elements often formed the starting point, after which they were reduced in his paintings to an almost meditative essence. This creates a visual language that feels both recognizable and abstract.
An important aspect of his oeuvre is the attention to light. With thin, transparent glaze layers and carefully built color nuances, Van Soest managed to create a remarkable depth and spatiality. The restrained compositions radiate calm, while small shifts in tone and texture keep the surface lively. This balance between simplicity and refinement gives his work a timeless quality.
