"De vaart" by Dutch artist Wouter van Soest, an oil painting from the 1990s depicting a seascape and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
This painting was created by the Dutch artist Wouter van Soest (1938–2007), a painter who in the second half of the twentieth century occupied a completely distinct place within Dutch modern art. Although he operated in a time when abstraction and conceptual art were becoming increasingly dominant, Van Soest remained faithful to painting as a medium to explore light, space, and stillness.
His work is characterized by a great sensitivity to atmosphere and a subtle handling of color. Van Soest did not depict literal representations of reality, but rather its experience. Landscapes, skies, and architectural elements often formed the starting point, from which they were reduced in his paintings to an almost meditative essence. Thus, a visual language emerges that feels simultaneously recognizable and abstract.
An important aspect of his oeuvre is the attention to light. With thin, transparent coats of paint and carefully built color nuances, Van Soest managed to create a remarkable depth and spatiality. The restrained compositions exude calm, while small shifts in tone and texture keep the surface lively. This balance between simplicity and refinement gives his work a timeless quality.
