He is regarded as one of the finest Spanish sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. The major retrospectives of Chillida’s graphic and sculptural work have been organised by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1966); the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1979); the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1979); the Guggenheim Museum (1980); the Miramar Palace, San Sebastián (1992); and the Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum, Madrid (1999).
