Description from the seller
For sale is an extremely rare original Bearbrick 1000% in the Grey/Blue colorway by KAWS, one of the most influential artists of the contemporary street art and pop art movement. Only 500 pieces of this work were ever produced. Very few examples can still be offered with the original box today, which is a decisive value driver for this piece.
This collector's item currently trades in the range of 17,000 to 22,000 euros.
This Bearbrick 1000% features the KAWS Companion motif in grey and blue, complete with the original packaging and a gallery certificate. At 1000% scale, the figure makes a striking centerpiece for any collection or exhibition space.
Bearbrick is a figure series by Japanese manufacturer Medicom Toy, introduced in 2001. The base form, a stylized bear with round ears and movable joints, serves as a canvas for collaborations with artists, fashion houses, and brands. The figures are produced in various scales, ranging from 100% (small) up to 1000%, which at roughly 70 cm tall is the largest regular series size. Thanks to the combination of limited runs, prominent collaboration partners, and the collector culture surrounding streetwear and toy art, Bearbrick has built its own distinct secondary market over the years.
KAWS, born Brian Donnelly in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey, began his career in the 1990s doing graffiti in New York before moving on to painting over advertising posters and bus stop ads with his own imagery. His most recognizable character is the Companion, a figure with XX eyes and a skull like silhouette, closely modeled on Mickey Mouse. Over the years KAWS has expanded his visual language into sculpture, painting, and limited editions with brands such as Uniqlo, Dior, Nike, and of course Medicom Toy. His work now trades regularly at major auction houses, and his large scale sculptures stand in cities including Hong Kong, Seoul, and New York.
Condition: very good condition with wear consistent with age (nearly 20 years old)
Shipping: insured shipping with tracking, worldwide, securely packed in the original box with additional protective material
Certificate: gallery certificate as proof of authenticity
Produced by Medicom Toy, Tokyo Bibliography cf p.138-139
