Description from the seller
# Ronson Touch-Tip “Octette” Art Deco Table Lighter
United States, 1930s
Ronson Touch-Tip “Octette” Art Deco table lighter, manufactured in the United States during the 1930s.
The Octette was one of the principal Art Deco designs produced by Ronson and an important model within the company’s highly successful Touch-Tip series. This range represented a significant development in table-lighter design, helping to replace traditional manually struck lighters with a more refined automatic mechanism. The commercial and technical success of the Touch-Tip series played an important role in establishing Ronson as one of the leading manufacturers of automatic lighters.
The lighter is constructed with a black moulded Bakelite body in the characteristic octagonal Machine Age profile, set on a substantial stepped chrome-plated metal base. Its geometric form, architectural proportions and contrast between black Bakelite and polished chrome are characteristic of American Art Deco industrial design.
The upper section incorporates the Touch-Tip mechanism, fuel reservoir and socket for the removable lighting wand. The original removable lighting wand is present. This component is frequently missing from surviving examples and is an important feature for collectors.
