Paul Viou was a French pipe-making brand from Saint-Claude, in the Jura — historically known as the "capital of the briar pipe." Paul Viou sold pipes by mail order and later supplied pipes to French military institutions, doing brisk business with soldiers during the Algerian War in the 1950s–60s. (Reborn Pipes) The workshop was later absorbed into the Genod/Craen ateliers, who continued production under the Genod Viou name — a lineage that still operates today at 13 Faubourg Marcel, Saint-Claude, France (Maitrepipier) . This piece dates from the earlier, independent Paul Viou era, consistent with the artwork on the box.

Stem: vulcanite/ebonite, long curved "churchwarden" style
Stamps: "P. VIOU" on the shank and stem; "BRUYÈRE" stamped on the reverse of the shank

Condition
Barely used, excellent overall condition for its age. Comes with the original illustrated cardboard box (Paul Viou, Saint Claude, Jura, France). Only flaw is a small chip on the side of the bowl visible in last image does not affect the smoking function.
Provenance / Notes
A well-preserved example of a vintage Saint-Claude churchwarden, ideal for collectors of French pipe-making history or vintage tobacciana. The exceptionally long stem and light use suggest this was more a display or collector's piece than a daily smoker.
