Otto Piene was a prominent German artist of the postwar period and cofounder of the ZERO group (1957) together with Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker. The ZERO movement stands for renewal, light art, kinetic art, Op Art, reduction, movement and spatial effect. Piene worked intensively with light installations, grid structures, fire paintings (Fire Paintings), smoke drawings (Smoke Drawings) and later with Sky Art and air sculptures.
