Marc Simon is an important figure in French press photography, better known as a photo editor and the head of the photo department at VSD than as an author-photographer.
Career
From 2000 to 2018, Marc Simon directed the photo department of the magazine VSD, where he oversaw the selection, editing and publication of numerous photographic reports. In that role, he contributed to the visual identity of the magazine, prioritizing a demanding photojournalism focused on the strength of storytelling through images.
After leaving VSD, he continued his activity in the world of photography as:
- president of the jury for the Mark Grosset–SAIF Prize of Promenades Photographiques;
- secretary general of the Centre International de Recherche de l'Imagerie Politique (CIRIP);
- member of the board of Promenades Photographiques and speaker in photography education.
His work as a photographer
Marc Simon also carried out reports for VSD, including portraits of personalities and current affairs subjects. Some of his photographs are now offered on the collectors’ market. Among them is an argentique print made in 1984 depicting Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin aboard the frigate Guépratte during a report for VSD.
