Jan Schoonhoven (1914–1994) is one of the most important Dutch artists of the 20th century and was a key figure in the international ZERO movement.
He gained worldwide recognition through his strictly geometric reliefs and graphic works, in which light, structure and repetition play a central role. Despite his international success, Schoonhoven worked as a civil servant in Delft up to his retirement and created his art mainly in the evening hours. His works are characterized by their formal clarity and timeless aesthetics.
Works by Jan Schoonhoven are among others in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (Kunstmuseum Den Haag), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, as well as the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
