The artist was born in Chicago in 1944 as Joyce Adduci; she adopted the surname Neimanas from her first husband. She earned her B.A. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1966 and her M.F.A. in 1969. There she studied with Kenneth Josephson. After graduating she taught at SAIC, was eventually named professor and became department chair. Neimanas met the artist Robert Heinecken in the 1970s, when he was a visiting professor in Chicago, and when they became a couple (and eventually married), the two alternated between living in Chicago, where she was based, and Los Angeles, where he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. Neimanas accepted a teaching position at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where she taught for a few years. She still lives and works in Albuquerque.
