With this square-format artwork, Medsan sets the Going Merry, the legendary ship of the Straw Hat Pirates from One Piece, sailing through a heart of Japanese autumn landscape ablaze with scarlet maples.

The treatment deploys generous oil in impasto: the momiji (Japanese maples) foliage is worked in thick strokes, a five-story pagoda rises from the mountain mist, and the river, strewn with reddish leaves, reflects a golden sky enriched with texture. All the charm of the mashup arises from the contrast between the cartoonish and joyful rendering of the small ship — sail with a Jolly Roger, ram's-head figurehead — and the pictorial depth of the setting.
