With this vertically oriented work, Medsan stages Saitama, the hero of One Punch Man, at the peak of his power: a single punch is enough to cleave the ocean, while a gigantic kaiju collapses in smoke.

The treatment fuses Japanese printmaking and action posters: the Great Wave off Kanagawa unfurls in black-edged swirls, the monstrous enemy rises in a silhouette like a Godzilla shadow, and the hero’s silhouette — yellow combination, red gloves and boots, white cape billowing in the wind — cuts through with vivid flat colors against the Prussian blues of the swell. The cartouche ワンパンマン closes the composition in the top right.

All the humor of the series lies in this contrast: the most powerful hero in the universe, with an impassive, blasé expression, settles the titanic battles with an everyday gesture. Medsan captures this quiet power, this sublime defusing by derision.

About the Workshop:
