Eugen Gomringer was born in 1925 in Cachuela Esperanza, Bolivia, as the son of a Bolivian woman and a Swiss expatriate, and grew up in Switzerland. He studied art history and economics and became one of the co-founders of Concrete Poetry. Under the influence, among others, of Max Bill and the South American innovator, a reduction of language to its basic elements. What is meant by that is shown by his "konstellationen, constellations, constelaciones". After a career in business, he held professorships in Düsseldorf, Bamberg, Zwickau and Schneeberg.
