Achille Perilli (Rome, January 28, 1927 – Orvieto, October 16, 2021) was an Italian painter, one of the most authoritative figures of Italian abstract art of the twentieth century.
He attended the classical lyceum and in 1945 enrolled in the Faculty of Humanities, preparing a thesis on Giorgio de Chirico without graduating. He was cofounder, with Attardi, Consagra, Dorazio, Guerrini, Accardi, Sanfilippo and Turcato, of the artistic avant-garde called Gruppo Forma, inspired by Marxist thought.
He exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, including participation in the Venice International Art Exposition in 1952, 1958, and in 1962 and 1968 with a solo gallery room. From 1948 to 1986 he participated in five editions of the Quadriennale di Roma. He won the XI Lissone Painting Prize in 1959. In 1963-64 he exhibited in the show Peintures italiennes d'aujourd'hui, organized in the Middle East and in North Africa. For his work he became a member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in 1995 and received the President of the Republic Award in 1997.
He founded, together with Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Renzo Vespignani, Buratti, Muccini, and Maffioletti, the Gruppo Arte Sociale (GAS). Together with Dorazio and Guerrini he founded the bookstore-gallery "Age d'Or" with which he became organizer of artistic events such as collaborating with the Triennale di Milano invited by Lucio Fontana.
His stylistic signature was the constant search for the use and combination of geometric shapes and bright colors, pursued throughout his life, investigating the forms of abstraction even within a coherent stylistic framework.
