Geneviève Claisse: Construction (1961)
Silkscreen in black on wove paper, published in 1961 by Editions Panderma, Carl Laszlo, Basel, in an edition of 160.
The sheet dates from the year of Claisse's first exhibition at Galerie Denise René in Paris, and from the period in which she was working directly out of the orthogonal vocabulary of her great-uncle Auguste Herbin, before the circles and triangles of her mid-1960s work.
Signed and dated 1961 [in ink, upper margin — please note the orientation of the signature relative to the date, visible in the photograph]. Edition of 160.
Sheet 28 × 15 cm. Framed under glass with passe-partout, frame 52 × 22 × 3 cm.
Condition: Heavy signs of use, some spots, light age-toning and a few small scattered foxing spots in the paper, visible in the photograph.

Geneviève Claisse (1935–2018) was born in Quiévy in northern France. At eighteen she met her great-uncle Auguste Herbin, one of the central figures of French geometric abstraction, who taught her personally and took her on as his studio assistant in Paris. Her first exhibitions were held in 1958 in Cambrai and Paris; from 1961 she showed regularly at Galerie Denise René, the gallery that defined the postwar reception of constructive and kinetic art in Europe. From the mid-1960s she reduced her vocabulary to the circle and the triangle, working on flat kinetic sequences of pure colour. Her work was shown at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds (1967), the Nasjonalgalleriet Oslo (1968), the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille (1983) and the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis (1989).
Editions Panderma was run in Basel by the collector, publisher and psychoanalyst Carl Laszlo (1923–2013), who from the late 1950s onwards brought together the European avant-garde in his Panderma portfolios and publications.
