The work, with impressive provenance, titled Bathsheba, dates from 1989, a period in which Tobiasse had fully developed his characteristic and internationally acclaimed visual language. Biblical themes, female figures and a poetic, narrative symbolism form an important part of his oeuvre. The expressive color palette, strong contour lines and lively brushwork give the painting the so-called Tobiasse look.
The painting is signed and dated at the bottom right.
The work is in good overall condition and is housed in a handsome, high-quality frame. The frame complements the painting in style and appearance, forming a harmonious whole, making the work immediately ready for presentation.
In the paint layer, there is locally a slight relief visible. This relief arose during the painting process and is part of the original paint buildup.
