Description from the seller
PORTRAIT OF PAULA is a 70x100 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. This work features a woman elegantly seated in a chair with a classical-inspired design, dressed in a pale blue outfit that harmonizes with the turquoise-toned background. Her serene posture, crossed legs, and a calm but resolute gaze build a female portrait of great balance, refinement, and psychological depth.
The composition combines a female portrait, an interior scene, and contemporary figurative painting. Paula occupies the visual center of the work, while the chair upholstered with floral patterns, the plant placed to the side, and the decorative piece in the background provide information about the surroundings and enrich the portrait subject’s identity. The space is reduced to essential forms, allowing the figure to retain full prominence without losing the intimate, domestic character of the scene.
The palette is dominated by light blues, soft greens, earth tones, and small red accents. The blue dress integrates delicately with the background, while the warm floor and the floral upholstery create contrast and depth. The visible brushwork, the synthesis of forms, and the subjective use of color bring the work closer to Post-Impressionism, moderate Fauvism, and the modern tradition of psychological portraiture.
Affinities can be seen with Henri Matisse in the relationship between figure, furniture, and decoration, as well as echoes of Amedeo Modigliani in the elegant stylization of the protagonist and in the emphasis placed on her inner presence. There is also a dialogue with the female portraits of Édouard Vuillard and the École de Paris, where the domestic environment helps express the character and sensitivity of the model.
The decorative piece located to the left introduces a reference to Eastern arts and provides a historical counterpoint to the painting’s contemporary language. The chair with a classical structure and floral upholstery reinforces the sense of timeless elegance, while Paula’s expression avoids an overly solemn pose and conveys serenity, confidence, and a certain melancholy.
Portrait of Paula is especially attractive to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, female portrait, seated woman, blue dress, psychological portrait, elegant interiors, classical furniture, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, École de Paris, and works with references to Matisse, Modigliani, and Vuillard.
