Original woodblock print by Nomura Yoshimitsu (1870–1958), Sannen Hill from the Kyoraku Meisho series, 1931, Japan, edition 58/200, signed on the block with the red publisher seal and a back stamp confirming the limited edition, in very good condition with minor damage to the top-left corner; image size 38 cm high by 24.5 cm wide.
Description from the seller
Original woodcut.
Artist: Nomura Yoshimitsu (1870–1958)
Title: Hill Sannen (from the series "Kyoraku Meisho" – "Famous Places of Kyoto")
Year: 1931
Numbered: 58/200
- In the lower-left corner: The characters traced vertically above the seals constitute the artist's autograph, readable as 芳光 (Yoshimitsu), followed by the character zu ("drawn by").
- The red rectangular stamp in the lower-right corner is the additional official publisher’s seal of Sato Shotaro. The characters enclosed in the seal read vertically as 佐藤工 (Satō kō / Satō takumi), literally meaning "Product/Work of Sato".
- Seal on the back lower-right corner: This back stamp is an exceptional proof certifying the original limited edition of 1931, and significantly increases its value and rarity.
Top line: 貳百番限絶版 (Nihaku-ban gentei zeppan). Meaning "Limited edition of 200 copies, wood blocks destroyed (out of print)." The term zeppan guarantees that the wood blocks used for printing have been withdrawn or destroyed to never produce more copies. Bottom line: 第 五十八 號 (Dai gojūhachi gō). Meaning "Number 58."
The presence of this official period numbering (copy 58 of 200) on the back is the ultimate collectible reference for the Shin-hanga movement.
Rarity: Very many prints on the market do not bear this stamp because they belong to later commercial print runs or are unnumbered.
Represents the famous historic climb of Sannenzaka leading to Kiyomizu-dera temple.
Condition: light damage in the upper left corner. On the back: small glue residue in the upper right corner. Otherwise, very good condition.
It will be packed with extreme care, and reinforced.
All custom-made.
Tracked and insured shipping.
