A Kyoto Raku chawan in ceramic, hand-formed by Master Toko Nakamura IV circa 1940–1950, with full Sō-gusuri glaze and Te-zukune construction, diameter 11 cm, height 8.5 cm, in excellent condition and accompanied by the original Tomobako with the master’s autograph and seal.
Description from the seller
A magnificent and rare Kyoto Raku ceramic Chawan, autograph work by the celebrated Master Toko Nakamura IV (fourth generation).
An antique piece of extraordinary spiritual presence and historical charm, perfect for the practice of Chanoyu or for the most demanding collections of Oriental art.
Te-zukune workmanship: shaped entirely by hand without using the potter's wheel, hollowing out and shaping the clay block. This technique gives the Chawan an organic asymmetry and a unique ergonomics, designed to rest perfectly in the guest's hands.
Integral Sō-gusuri glaze: the cup is entirely enveloped by the characteristic Raku glaze, which even coats the foot (Kodai), providing visual and tactile continuity to the piece.
Yabunari imprints: on the base the traces left by the firing pegs are clearly visible, a decisive proof and unmistakable hallmark of traditional firing in a wood/charcoal-fired Raku kiln.
About 70–80 years old (Mid-Showa Period). Excellent antique condition.
Comes with its original Tomobako, showing aging consistent with the period, complete with the autograph signature and seal of Master Toko Nakamura IV.
Diameter 11 cm, height 8 cm.
