If Claudio Castiglioni had known what Erik Buell planned in 1986 (and vice versa), the outcome of this story could have been very different.
While Buell was trying to build a sportbike around a cruiser engine, the Italian entrepreneur planned to break into the American market with a cruiser built around a sportbike engine.
The latter experiment, though unsuccessful on the market, produced a fascinating and well-executed motorcycle that could easily outperform its rivals, while cutting a dash in glamour assignments with its European flair.
Italian connections
Despite the name on the tank, the Ducati Indiana was not built by Ducati, but by Cagiva. The company Cagiva (CAstiglioni-GIovanni-VArese), founded in Varese, Italy in 1950 by Giovanni Castiglioni, earned its money in electronics; but in 1978, under the leadership of Giovanni’s two sons, Claudio and Gianfranco, the company began manufacturing motorcycles and bought the remnants of the old Aermacchi factory from Harley-Davidson.
The Ducati Indiana was produced from 1986 to 1988.
It is a cruiser model and differs considerably from the usual Ducatis. The 650 Pantah engine is air-cooled with the classic 90-degree V-twin with Desmodromic valve control. The power output is modest.
The modified double-loop steel tubing frame allows an upright riding position. The 13-liter fuel tank is adequate.
The vehicle is maintained and ride-ready.
It has only 12,771 kilometers.
Brought back to running condition in 2025 after a longer period of inactivity.

It is a reliable, rare bike with eye-catching appeal.
