Zylla's work is part of the German Neo-Expressionist movement. It is characterized by the use of vibrant colors, calligraphic strokes, integrated text, and the creation of hybrid, grotesque, and imaginary figures that challenged the official socialist realism of the GDR.
The term originally comes from the poem "Ajax zum Beispiel" ("Ajax, for example") by the celebrated German playwright Heiner Müller. In his verses, he uses the compound word "LENINDADA" to reflect Vladimir Lenin's final paralysis following his strokes, conflating the figure of the revolutionary leader with the anti-rationalist absurdity of the Dada movement.
