Markus Lüpertz was born in 1941 in Liberec (Reichenberg) and is one of the most influential German artists of contemporary times. Since the 1960s, he has developed an independent visual language that deliberately engages with European art history and translates traditional motifs into a modern form of expression.

He became known especially for his expressive paintings, sculptures, and graphic works in which he processes themes such as mythology, landscape, war, and human existence. From 1988 to 2009, he served as rector of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, shaping several generations of artists in the process.

His works have been shown internationally and are part of numerous important collections. Today, Markus Lüpertz is established among the prominent post-1945 German artists. His graphics and editions are in global demand due to their blend of art history, individual handwriting, and collector appeal.
