Description from the seller

Antique, hand-carved meerschaum pipe (also known as a meerschaum pipe). This type of tobacco pipe is highly prized among collectors due to the detailed carving and the unique properties of the material.

Key features

Material (Meerschaum): This is sepiolite, a soft and porous mineral that is mined mainly in the region around Eskişehir in Turkey. The material absorbs moisture and tar, causing the pipe to slowly darken from white to a warm butterscotch- or amber-colored hue while smoking.

Design: The head of this particular pipe is expertly carved in the shape of a face with a traditional headdress or turban, a classic Oriental or Turkish sultan motif that was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Mouthpiece: The dark red, translucent mouthpiece is presumably made of (antique) amber or early plastics such as Bakelite.

Case: The pipe sits in the original, custom-made storage case (foedraal), which is lined on the inside with a distinctive orange or velvet fabric to protect the fragile mineral.
