ABOUT THE ARTIST

Markus Lüpertz (born 1941) is one of Germany’s most influential contemporary artists, renowned for his contributions to Neo-Expressionism. Born in Liberec (now Czech Republic), he moved to Germany as a child and developed a powerful artistic language that combines classical references with bold abstraction and expressive figuration. Working across painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, Lüpertz has produced an extensive body of etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts distinguished by their vigorous forms, symbolic imagery, and masterful technique. His work explores themes drawn from mythology, history, music, and literature, bridging tradition and modernity. Among his major achievements are numerous international exhibitions, his long tenure as rector of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and his recognition as one of the leading figures of postwar European art, with works held in major museum collections worldwide.
In the late 1940s, he co-founded the Forma 1 group, which promoted abstract art in Italy in opposition to realism. His work was influenced by Constructivism and modern European abstraction, while also developing a highly personal visual language. Dorazio gained international recognition through exhibitions in Europe and the United States and later taught at the University of Pennsylvania.

Among his major artistic achievements are his contribution to the renewal of Italian abstraction and his lasting influence on contemporary geometric painting.
